I recently read an article on the Huffington Post about how architecture lacks 'soul' and creativity. It talks about a theory by Travis Price, an architect and philosopher, about how we must bring nature back into Architecture. Price, who is a professor of Architecture, actually takes his students on trips to different locations every year for them to create modern architecture in those environment. What they create has to reflect the culture and ecology of the region. There are pictures to the right of some of their creations. "Nature-inspired structures have a positive psychological effect on the communities in which they exist," Gray, the author, mentions. This one sentence really sparked my interest into if this is true or not. I started thinking about how people love gardens in public places, which are nature-inspired, and how people crave parks with big trees and soft grass, it's a pattern. People expect to be able to find those things around them, because builders know what works. Over time, the world has become rigid and over developed, but if there was a way to bring nature back into architecture, I think it would be amazing. A person of interest would be Travis Price, to pick his brain and see how he thinks we can reach a solution that will stick for this problem. The article is linked below, it's an interesting read: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/monica-gray/the-problem-with-architec_b_4869707.html I think this could be modeled into a great research project on how nature affects architecture and people, and how to bring nature into architecture. | I want to know what exactly is appealing about these natural structures and how they affect people. I would also want to see if this is the same for females, males, old people, young people, etc. - explore the demographics. Maybe even see if other countries and cultures have the same ideas or totally different ones. Maybe someone could use a endorphine sensor and compare/contrast how they feel somewhere with a nature focused architectural design and somewhere that is just a basic 'box' design. I also think there could be significant research into how nature affects people specifically such as the smell, the colors, how it feels (basically how does it appeal to the five senses.) Even take into consideration things like air quality, weather, etc. This article could really jump start a bunch of different projects. |
